11th Annual General Meeting of Members

UbuntuNet Alliance is pleased to announce that its 11th Annual General Meeting of  Members Meeting (AGM) will be held in Livingstone, Zambia on Friday, 21 April  2017 starting from 9am. The Meeting will be hosted by ZAMREN, the Zambian Research and Education Network. The AGM in being called in accordance with Article 18 of the Constitution of the Registered Trustees of the UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and Education Networking. 

As is the practice, the AGM will be preceded by a series of other events. 

The AGM is the highest policy body of UbuntuNet Alliance and is composed of Members and Observer Members (from NRENs in Construction) and the Board of Trustees. The AGM's main function is to sustain the will to collaborate at regional level. Among other duties, it is the one that appoints members of the Board of Trustees. 

Each Member NREN is entitled and required to send its representative to the AGM. It is desirable – but not mandatory – that the Representative is Chairperson or Member of the Board of the NREN or the CEO (Vice-Chancellor, Rector, or President) of one of the member institutions of the NREN so that there is a direct linkage between the policy level of the Alliance and the policy level of the NRENs. Representative Members have voting rights, whereas Observer Members do not.

One of the major agenda items at this upcoming AGM will be election of members of the  Board of Trustees for a 2 year term of office, as that of the current Trustees, who were elected at the 9th Annual General Meeting of Members held in Lilongwe, Malawi, on 27th March 2015, comes to the end. Therefore according to Article 8.2 of the Constitution of the Registered Trustees of UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and Education Networking, the Seceratraiat is calling for NREN Members to nominate up to 2 candidates for the Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees consists of nine people of whom, two – the Chairperson and the CEO – are ex-officio members. The Chairperson is identified through a process that is overseen by the Association of African Universities, and the CEO is appointed by the Board of Trustees. The other seven members of the Board of Trustees are elected by Members at the AGM.

Nominations should be submitted by completing an online form and attaching a cirruculum vitae (CV) of the candidate and a statement of acceptance of nomination by the candidate for the Board of Trustees. Each NREN Member has the right to nominate up to two candidates. Notice of the list of candidates including their CVs will be published on the UbuntuNet Alliance website for review by all Members in advance. Nominations should be submitted online by Wednesday , 16th February 2017.

CEOs of NREN Members are requested to work with their Boards in identifying candidates for the Board of Trustees. Such potential members do not necessarily have to be from the country of the NREN or the university and research community. The essence of the Board of Trustees is a group of individuals who have the complementary skills and experience to oversee the successful implementation of the strategic plan of the Alliance, rather than representing the interests of any particular NREN or other group.

CEOs of NRENs are welcome to attend the AGM on a self funding basis.
