UbuntuNet Alliance held its first Council
of Members meeting in Nairobi on 23rd February 2007. The Council
meeting drew together representatives from NRENs and
NRENs-in-construction in 16 countries in Africa. The Council
meeting was preceded by a short Research and Education
Networking Workshop in which the Alliance announced its new
plan of enabling NRENs and/or VSAT-connected institutions to
connect to the European Research and Education Network, Géant
using their existing internet connections.
Prior to the Council meeting, the
Association of African Universities nominated Professor Zimani
Kadzamira, Vice Chancellor of University of Malawi as
Chairperson for UbuntuNet Alliance. Professor Kadzamira will
be in office for a 3-year term.
Appointed at the Council of Members
meeting were the following Directors:
- Dr Jameson Mbale, University of
Zambia
- Professor F.F. Tusubira, Makerere
University
- Dr Duncan Martin, TENET
- Albert Nsengiyumva, RwEDNet
- Dr Americo Muchanga, Universidade
Eduardo Mondlane
- Margaret Ngwira, University of Malawi
- Victor Kyalo, KENET
This new Board will serve for 2 years.
Currently, the Alliance is moving forward towards recruiting a
full time CEO. | |
