Vision
To ensure that African Research
and Education Institutions participate effectively in the
global Research and Education networking community and
Knowledge Society.
Mission
To ensure that African NRENs have efficient and affordable
bandwidth for their member research and education institutions
and to participate in the global research and education
networking worldwide.
Objectives
The objectives of UbuntuNet Alliance are
to, on a non-profit basis:
- Develop and improve the
interconnectivity between Research and Education Networking
(REN) Participants in Africa and their connectivity with
research and education networks worldwide and with the
Internet generally;
- Develop the knowledge and skills of
ICT practitioners in these institutions; and
-
Provide related auxiliary services to
Research and Education Networking (REN) Participants.
Governance
The Alliance is governed by a Management
Board of Directors
elected by representatives from member RENs at the
Council of Member Meeting.
The Association of African Universities coordinates the
appointment of the Chairperson
from the region.
The current Chairperson is Professor
Zimani Kadzamira, Vice Chancellor of the University of Malawi.
The Alliance held its First
Council of Members meeting on 23rd February 2006 in Nairobi,
Kenya and appointed 7 Directors, replacing the initial
5-member Board which ware also the founding Directors.The Secretariat of the Alliance is
hosted at the University of
Malawi.
